Kohunlich México

Kohunlich is the name of a Maya city and ceremonial center located about 65 kilometers from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, in the Río Bec region, very close to the border between Mexico and Belize. The name Kohunlich comes from the English term “cohoon ridge,” which refers to the presence of corozo palms, a species characteristic of the Petén area. The settlement lies in an area where a flat landscape with underground drainage coexists with hilly terrain featuring small ravines and natural waterholes. It is made up of residential units and civic and ceremonial architectural complexes, surrounded by fertile agricultural land, covering an area of 14 km².
